Waimānalo AHEC

The Waimānalo Community Health Center board, composed of 12 community members, is overseeing AHEC program activities and will assist with establishing a Waimānalo AHEC board to include health care representatives and community members. Pi`iliani Kai, an MSW trained community social worker, is the acting AHEC Director.Current Waimānalo AHEC activities include clinical training for three medical students, two family medicine residents and two advanced practice nursing students a year as well as support for a culturally based in-school mentoring and health promotion program at the Waimānalo Elementary/Intermediate School. The Ku I Ka Mana (KIKM) program, which roughly translates to ‘children become what they are based on the care we give them’ provides in-school mentoring by six community mentors, in addition to after school health education and career development activities.Since fall, 2006, Kelley Withy has served as the KIKM program director, tasked with increasing and evaluating the impact of the health education and health careers recruitment components. With Model AHEC funding, the Waiamanlo AHEC proposes to introduce interdisciplinary community based training activities in Waimamalo, and integrate the interdisciplinary and the clinical students as vital elements of the Ku I Ka Mana Native Hawaiian mentorship and education program.
