Waste Disposal Guidelines
This guide was developed to assist campus tenants in disposal of waste materials generated by official JABSOM operations. These procedures do not apply to the disposal of personal or household wastes. Personal property should not be brought on campus for disposal since UH must pay for all wastes that are disposed of. The University of Hawaii is subject to very strict regulations regarding the disposal of almost anything. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, State of Hawaii Department of Health, City and County of Honolulu, and private landfills all have their own rules and regulations that apply to various types of waste material and these rules change frequently. Potential penalties include fines, rejection of entire loads and denial of access to the disposal facilities. Each tenant must assist in assuring that wastes are properly segregated and disposed of appropriately.

Personal Protective Equipment Guidelines
The type of PPE used will vary based on the level of precautions required, such as standard and contact, droplet or airborne infection isolation precautions. The procedure for putting on and removing PPE should be tailored to the specific type of PPE.

BSB Central Vacuum Use Guidelines
The Biosciences Research Building (BSB) is equipped with a Central House Vacuum System. The vacuum employs a powerful pump to distribute vacuum suction throughout the BSB via a copper piping system and vacuum turret valves located at the lab benches and in biosafety cabinets. In order to maintain the system and protect maintenance personnel who service the system, all efforts must be made to prevent the entry of aspirated fluids/particulates/vapors, especially hazardous chemicals and infectious fluids or aerosols. Fluids that enter the pipes will enter the vacuum system and contaminate the main pump. The entry of supposedly “nonhazardous” fluids may result in damaging moisture accumulation and corrosive effects. These guidelines shall be followed in order to ensure the proper use of the vacuum system. It is strongly recommended that researchers apply the same guidelines to their privately owned vacuum pumps.

Welcome to the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine at Kakaʻako (JABSOM Kakaʻako). Our campus has established a number of policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment. The information contained herein is designed to give site-specific information about the hazardous materials at our facility, the associated hazards, and the control of these hazards through a comprehensive hazard communication program.
Safety Information Brochure for Visitors
It is important to us that we have a mutually satisfactory relationship, that work is done efficiently and in compliance with contract requirements and applicable regulations. All contractor personnel are required to comply with these guidelines and work rules. Inspections may be conducted to verify compliance.
Biosciences Building Visitors
Visitors include all those who do not have Biosciences Building (BSB) card access, including but not limited to, contractors, vendors, inspectors, guest, family members, etc. Please be advised that you are entering a biomedical research facility. This is a facility where infectious biological agents, hazardous chemicals, and radioactive isotopes are commonly used. It is important that you read and understand the following guidelines.
Minors & High School Students
JABSOM is committed to providing educational opportunities to high school students and minors under the age of 18, participating in officially sanctioned educational programs or activities. JABSOM strives to ensure a safe, educational, and interesting experience for our students. It is important to recognize that professional research laboratories have inherent risks and dangers and that students and their parents/legal guardians understand and acknowledge this, as well as the restrictions placed on minors working in a JABSOM laboratory.
